For University Students

Bring your curiosity. Learn from a lifetime of experience.

Build a genuine connection with an older adult through shared conversation, interests and projects.

A two-way relationship

More than a role. A chance to exchange.

Older adults are not simply recipients of help, and students are not simply providers of company. Each person brings knowledge, perspective and interests. Together, you may talk, learn, explore, create or work on a digital project.

Students who enjoy technology may help an older adult organize photographs or develop a personal webpage, guided by that person's story, choices and voice.

Who we're looking for

Reliable, patient and respectful students who listen well, communicate comfortably with older adults and are curious about other people's lives. For one-to-one connection roles, healthcare or psychology training is not required. HomeShare practical tasks are non-medical, separately agreed and are not caregiving.

What the selection process can include

Application review → interview → references → appropriate screening → training → employment agreement → matching and ongoing support.

Current openings, eligibility, compensation and required screening are confirmed for each hiring round. Do not treat an interest form as a job offer.

Ways students can take part

Community programs

Young & Wise connects older adults with university students seeking a suitable place to live and meaningful paid work. Housing terms and any paid support are discussed separately, documented in advance and agreed by the people involved. Possible activities include grocery shopping, dog walking, light meal preparation, technology help, errands and companionship. Students do not provide nursing, medical or personal care, including bathing, toileting, medication administration, lifting or transfers. Each match includes screening, a home suitability discussion, clear boundaries and continuing check-ins.

Community programs

Young & Wise works with retirement residences and senior living organizations to shape intergenerational programs that bring students and older adults together through conversation, shared meals, activities, technology learning, storytelling and creative projects. Program design, participant screening, orientation, schedules and ongoing coordination are tailored with each organization. Students take part as neighbors and community members, not as care staff.
